Human Rights Watch criticised European Union for remaining silent on Shia detainees in Saudi Arabia

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that the Saudi regime has sentenced 7 activists from Al-Sharghiah to 5-10 years in prison. These sentences are for writing messages to call for peaceful gatherings. According to Alyoum Alsaabe’a news association, HRW has asked Catherine Ashton the Head of EU’s foreign affairs to discuss the fate of all detainees with Saudi and Bahraini authorities in her forthcoming travel to Manama.

In the past two years, the al-Sharghiah area has witnessed widespread demonstrations by Saudi youths and the representative of HRW in the Middle East, Joe Stork said some people just for the sake of writing peaceful messages on the social sites have been arrested. He added that in Saudi Arabia the social sites are not safe places any more for expressing views. Stork also asked the EU to warn the USA about these oppressing measures and inform them that by remaining silent in fact they are approving the oppressions.
