President: US Must Change Attitude
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad deplored US policy of pressure and talks, and called on Washington to show practical change in its attitudes towards Iran.
Speaking in a press conference in Cairo on Thursday, President Ahmadinejad said Tehran rejected US proposal for talks because of Washington's attitude being from the position of pressure and imposition.
Ahmadinejad, who was in Cairo to attend the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), stressed that talks must be based on "understanding".
"Americans have recently changed their tune and if they also change they actions and approach and respect justice and the rights of the Iranian nation we will consider their proposals positively," he underscored.
His remarks came after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Thursday dismissed the US offer of direct talks with Iran, saying that the proposal has been made in word, while Washington's actions show a different course, meaning that the offer is nothing but a cunning move.
The Iranian Supreme Leader's remarks came after US Vice-President Joe Biden, speaking at this year's Munich Security Conference, reiterated previous indications that the US was prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran.
The United States and Iran broke diplomatic relations in April 1980, after Iranian students seized the United States' espionage center at its embassy in Tehran. The two countries have had tense relations ever since, but have shown willingness to attend talks to help resolve regional issues, including security in Iraq. Yet, the two countries have avoided talks on bilateral issues for the last thirty years.
Promote Justice
President Ahmadinejad said Iran and Egypt can form a strong front to counter arrogant powers and promote justice in the world.
Addressing the Egyptian cultural and political elite in Cairo on Thursday, the president questioned the existence of conflicts among Muslims and between Muslims and Christians and added that Iran and Egypt can adopt an approach to promote unity across the universe.
He added that Muslims should pursue common goals because “we have a common enemy.”
Ahmadinejad expressed confidence that the Iranian and Egyptian nations are willing to cooperate with each other in order to establish a world based on justice and humanity.
Our nations should follow up long-term objectives to reach unity and convergence, Ahmadinejad pointed out.
Former secretary general of the Arab League and prominent political figure Amr Mousa were also present in the meeting.
Meanwhile, addressing a meeting with Iranian nationals and foreign ambassadors in Egypt, President Ahmadinejad said enemies of humanity are using force against people and killing them and emphasized that the era of arrogant and bullying powers has come to an end.
The Zionists and arrogant powers would undoubtedly fall and the day of the nations’ freedom would come, he added.
Meets Top Officials
President Ahmadinejad and member of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Presidency Council Bakir Izetbegovic exchanged views on bilateral relations and the latest developments in the region, Syria in particular.
During the meeting held on the sidelines of the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Cairo on Thursday, President Ahmadinejad called on all members of the international community to spare no effort to help Syria overcome its current problems.
"The rights of all ranks of the Syrian society, given its tribal structure, can only be restored through unity and national reconciliation. The Islamic Republic of Iran is trying to work out a solution and end the Syrian unrest," the Iranian president said.
Ahmadinejad reiterated the urgent need for national reconciliation in Syria and expressed the hope that all parties involved in the Syrian conflict would end violence and follow the path to national dialogue, understanding and free elections.
During the meeting, Izetbegovic called for the expansion of Sarajevo-Tehran relations.
He noted that Bosnian Muslims would like to see an increase in the Islamic world's influence in the international arena.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.
President Ahmadinejad said nations can only achieve victory through unity, patience and resistance against their enemies.
He made the remark in a meeting with his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir on the sidelines of the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Egyptian capital city, Cairo, on Wednesday.
He added that enemies will be weakened day by day as the result of the nations' resistance, and this will change the situation to the benefit of nations.
Ahmadinejad also described the relations between Iran and Sudan as profound and brotherly, adding that the two nations have common enemies.
The Iranian president stressed the importance of promoting ties between Tehran and Khartoum in different economic, cultural and political areas.
“By realizing all the existing capacities, [we] should increase cooperation day by day to the benefit of the two nations [of Iran and Sudan], and all nations,” he pointed out.
The Sudanese president, for his part, described the Tehran-Khartoum relations as excellent, adding that the main reason for such strong ties is that the two countries' relations are based on Islamic values.
Bashir also stated that Iran and Sudan have many commonalities and face the same enemy, stressing that the two countries should develop cooperation at different bilateral and international levels.
President Ahmadinejad also met with his Somali counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and reviewed the latest developments in bilateral relations between the two countries.
President Ahmadinejad said Iran will support the process of progress in Somalia.
He pointed to the improving situation in that country, and said it enjoys rich resources which should be used in order to make further development.
He voiced Iran's readiness to contribute in Somalia's development in all possible areas.
The Somali President appreciated Iran's support for his country.
