A United Nations report on ISIL war crimes provides possible pretext for the United States to advance further into Syria, a commentator tells Press TV.
James Fetzer, a political commentator from Madison said in an interview with Press TV on Friday in response to a United Nations probe concluding ISIL has committed war crimes in Syria, saying "What’s going on here appears to be a cover story to get the United States in to attack the Syrian infrastructure including its oil refinery, grain silos and bridges."
"I believe there is an attempt being made now to stir up public hysteria so that we’re going to rush a lot of Western forces into Syria that are going to be used to take out the Assad regime," he added.
Fetzer questioned what he called the United Nation’s one-sided allegiance to the West. "The United Nations unfortunately has become a vessel for propaganda and disinformation, and even if these atrocities are taking place, the West is not the solution. Bring in Russian military aircraft, bring in Iranian troops – those are people the Syrian government can count on. Don’t bring in the United States."
The remarks come as a United Nations investigative panel has concluded that the ISIL terrorist group has committed systematic war crimes including mass executions and kidnapping of women and girls as sex slaves, which need to be prosecuted.
On Friday, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria released a report recounting the terror sowed at the hands of the militants.
In Syria and Iraq, swathes of territories have been seized by ISIL militants, who have terrorized and killed people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
