No one would accept (the suggestions). They finally decided to take the issue to the Prophet (Peace be upon him and his descendants)

Why should a young man be the governor of Mecca while there were seniors in age among the Companions?

The Prophet (Peace be upon him and his descendants) said, "Age is not a criterion for undertaking a responsibility; the criteria are worthiness and virtue but not age. And it is virtue and worthiness which are the reasons for nobility."
