30 killed, 42 injured in near Iraq sunni mosque attacks

At least 30 people have been killed and 42 others injured in two bomb explosions near a Sunni mosque in Baquba north of Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The blasts hit the al-Salam Mosque on the outskirts of Baquba, 60 kilometers north of the capital, as worshippers were leaving joint Shia-Sunni Friday Prayers.

The two bombs went off minutes apart. The second bomb exploded as crowds gathered to help those injured in the first blast.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, but Iraqi al-Qaeda frequently carries out coordinated bombings against such civilian targets as mosques, markets and restaurants.

The terrorist group primarily targets Shias, security forces and government officials, but it is now targeting Sunnis too in a bid to push the country into sectarian fighting.

Violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.

On Wednesday, at least 30 people were killed and 55 others were wounded in an explosion outside the Tamimi Mosque in the Waziriyah neighborhood of the capital Baghdad.

According to the United Nations, more than 800 people have been killed across Iraq in various acts of terrorism in August alone.

UN figures also say that over 4,000 people have died in terrorist attacks in Iraq so far in 2013, with Baghdad province hit worst.
