A newly formed front calling itself “Egyptian Ulamas against the coup” after the removal of Morsi from power condemned the silence of some scholars on the killings of protestors and supporting the army coup headed by General Al-Sisi. A statement issued by the front and read by Jamal Abdulsattar asked for the trial of Al-Azhar Sheikh as well as the Mufti of Egypt for their roles in the coup.

The statement warned the army leaders about attacking people and condemned attacks on Mosques including the Ibrahim Mosque where hundreds were arrested. The Ulamas front thanked people’s resistance and asked them to continue their protests till Morsi is returned to power. According to Al-Khabar news network after the statement was read the crowd shouted slogans like “down with the Sheikh of army” and “down with military’s Mufti”.
