Iran-Russia cooperation benefits energy market, Ahmadinejad tells Putin

Cooperation and coordination between Iran and Russia positively affects their relations and the global energy market, oPresident Mahmud Ahmadinejad said in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.

Ahmadinejad traveled to Moscow on Monday to attend a summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) on July 1 and 2.

Ahmadinejad also said that the Russian-made Bushehr nuclear power plant was the symbol of constructive cooperation between Iran and Russia, adding that the project could serve as a model for building new power plants.

The Russian president also said that the two countries had common interests in the Caspian Sea and the energy sector, adding that Tehran and Moscow should hold further talks to help enhance bilateral relations.

In addition, Putin underlined the need for increasing the volume of trade between the two countries.

Iran, Russia holding talks to resolve S-300 issue

In a meeting with a number of Russian intellectuals on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said that Iranian and Russian officials were holding negotiations to settle the issue of Russia’s failure to fulfill a contract for delivery of the S-300 missile system to Iran.

Russia signed a deal to deliver five batteries of S-300PMU-1 air defense systems to Iran in 2007 but cancelled the sale in September 2010, claiming the systems, along with a number of other weapons, were covered by the fourth round of UN Security Council sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program.

“Our colleagues are holding negotiations in this regard, and we hope that the issue will be resolved adequately. I see a good future for cooperation, and no issue can prevent the expansion of ties,” Ahmadinejad said.
