US, Israel masterminds of crisis in Syria: Iranian envoy
Iran’s Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi says the recent Israeli aggression against Syria proves that the United States and the Tel Aviv regime are the masterminds of the crisis in the Arab country.
Roknabadi made the remarks in a Wednesday meeting with a delegation of human rights activists from the US, Australia and a number of European as well as Latina American countries.
“The US and the Zionist regime (Israel) are the masterminds of the crisis in Syria, and the Zionist regime’s recent air strike against the country is the best testimony to that, proving there is full coordination between the regime and the extremist groups that have come to Syria from abroad,” the Iranian envoy said.
On May 5, Syria said that Israel had carried out an air raid targeting the Jamraya research center, in a suburb of Damascus. The center had been targeted by another Israeli air attack in January.
Expressing Iran’s opposition to any foreign interference in Syria, Roknabadi said the Islamic Republic has called on all foreign parties to remain committed to their “international obligation” to settle the crisis in Syria by cutting financial and military aid to the armed terrorist groups in the Arab country.
Since the onset of the crisis in Syria, the Iranian envoy added, Iran has stressed that the Syrian people’s demand for the implementation of reforms under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad should be met.
Also, believing that the crisis in Syria can only be settled through dialog, Tehran presented a six-point plan to help defuse the unrest, the top Iranian diplomat further said.
During the Wednesday meeting, the delegates expressed solidarity with the Syrian nation and government, calling for an end to the violence and conflict in the country. They also praised efforts made by Iran to help end the turmoil.
The Syrian government says the chaos that began in Syria over two years ago is being orchestrated from outside the country. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the unrest.
