Turkey’s first direct presidential election; Erdogan wins the election

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has won Turkey’s presidential election, becoming the first president directly elected by people.
According to unofficial data, Erdoğan won 51.6 percent of the votes, while his closest rival, Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, got 38.5 percent. Selahattin Demirtaş, the candidate of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), was able to get 9.8 percent.
Turnout rate was relatively low, 73 percent, as many voters were reluctant to cut short their vacation to go to ballot boxes.
